The NW Academy is accredited by the British Council, Accreditation UK, and ISO 9001 quality assurance scheme, and is an exam centre for Cambridge, IELTS, and Trinity exams. We also offer Secure English Language Test (SELT) preparation courses for students who require these qualifications for VISA purposes.

We are based in a large, modern building, close to the city centre. The building was designed by RIBA Awards 2015 Royal Gold Medal winners O’Donnell + Tuomey and was awarded 2nd place in the 2011 Stirling Prize for Architecture. We are excited to offer a variety of campus-style amenities, such as an onsite café, student lounge, IT area, book-lending facility, and 9 fully equipped, modern classrooms. We also have access to a large hall which can be used for a range of events including theatre and dance performances, concerts and conferences. It can also be used as an assembly point for students, a facility for social activities, and a venue for student inductions and meetings. The building as a whole provides students with a comfortable, welcoming environment in which to study English, relax with friends or simply have a cup of coffee while listening to live Irish music.

La Classe di Lingua Inglese

Calendario Anno Scolastico 2023/24

Title: Words for Success, Words for Life: The New General Service List Project

Abstract:

The NGSL Project (New General Service List Project) is an open-source collection of 7 corpus-based lists of essential words for second-language learners of English. Each word list was developed to offer the highest coverage in the world of any word list in that genre, and we also offer a large and growing collection of free online tools for learning, teaching, and using these lists.

This presentation will briefly introduce the NGSL wordlists and the science behind them, and then discuss and demonstrate some of our online learning tools. Three of the learning principles that have guided the development of learning tools include (1) learning words from authentic contexts, (2) learning through spaced repetition, and (3) gamification. All resources are available from the NGSL Project Website (www.newgeneralservicelist.com) including a link to my TEDx talk that introduces the NGSL wordlist.

At the end of the session, there will be time for questions, answers, and discussion as well as for an explanation of the follow-up assignment.

NOTE: After the presentation, each classroom will be invited to try out the NGSL wordlists and online learning tools and to submit a group reaction back to me within a month of my presentation (a short 3-5 minute video will be fine). I will then view your video reactions and respond to each group, also by video. It is hoped that this added level of interaction after my presentation will help you to better understand and utilize these great learning tools and lists!
